Firstly, you’ll want to check out the SEO agency’s own search results when you type in related keywords into Google, for example, “SEO agency” or “SEO agency” plus “{Your Area}.”

If they do not appear on the first or second page of the results, then it’s unlikely that they will be able to get you to those coveted spots.

The company should be able to supply examples of their SEO results for clients, backed up by references and before & after statistics. Generally, if you are able to get three bona fide references for a freelancer, you can feel confident that they know their stuff.

If in doubt, move on. Taking a gamble on someone who turns out to have overstated their expertise can be a costly error.


Be Skeptical of Over-Promising

It may take three to six months, or even a year, to see improved SERPs for any given keyword you are targeting. If an SEO agency promises you results at lightening speed, that should be a warning sign. If an SEO agency or sole practitioner tells you they can get you to the top three spots in the organic results in Google in less than a month, take this with a large grain of salt, especially if you are much further behind than that with your current keywords.

Google’s algorithms are incredibly complex and sophisticated. For an expert to claim to be able to ‘fool’ them with “black-hat” SEO trickery is as unethical as it is unlikely.

When you look at the sites in the top spots for your targeted keywords, they will often be authorities in their field or industry, with links to and from other reputable sites. Years of providing content that is well written and useful to prospective customers will get sites to the top positions.


An SEO Strategy Should Focus on Content

Hiring an SEO agency that can produce high quality, SEO-friendly content is also key. Regularly posting new, original, quality material is good because this is what Google’s “spiders” seek when they crawl the net.

Consistency is the way to achieve a coveted top spot on Google. That means regularly posting excellent new content.


Start with a Test

Because moving up the rankings takes time, consider starting with a six-month test. This gives the agency a fair amount of time to do their job without trapping you into a lengthy contract.

Be sure to include a money-back clause if they don’t hit certain, predefined performance targets. If they are reluctant to include these, you may want to look elsewhere.
